I have competed in the Ms. Wheelchair Pennnsylvania pageant twice. I didn't win either time, but it was a wonderful experience both times.
I first learned about the Ms. Wheelchair program back when I was in high school and saw Ms. Wheelchair Florida riding on a float in the Orange Bowl parade. But I could never find any information on it, so I forgot about it. Thre years after college graduation, a friend of mine told me that she had found some information on it and was entering Pennsylvania's inaugural pageant.
I decded to enter the next year. I entered, basically, to see if I could do it. I was never very adept at public speaking. But, I found out that I could do it and that I could do it well. I gave the personal interviews, the platform speech and the onstage interviews. I was named second runner-up.
I entered again the next year. Because I knew more of what they were looking for, I felt I had a legitimate chance at winning. Unfortunately, the other woman in the pageant was just more accomplished and did better in the personal interviews.
The entire weekend of both pageants were terrific and unforgettable experiences. I had considered entering the pageant one last time this year for the sole reason that there has never been a Ms. Wheelchair from my region in Pennsylvania. Unfortunately, it's just not a possibility this year in terms of time and money, a possible move to a new house or to a new state. Ms. Wheelchair PA is still looking for contestants for the 2007 pageant, but time is running out. If you are interested, contact me and I will put you in touch with the pageant coordinators or visit the website.
