» jan97233 - How can people on SSI pay for basic needs?

I am on SSI because I CAN'T work. I am expected to pay for my housing, utilities and food with the amount that the state has alloted to me. This is impossible. How can I get help? I will become homeless as of June 1, 2007 because the cost of living has gone up so much that I am unable to keep my apartment. Help...

Hi Jan,

I understand your problem and think it's ridiculous that the government thinks people can survive on the allotted amount. Have you looked into Section 8 Housing through HUD? That can help with rent and/or mortgage. There are also food stamps available and welfare, if you qualify.

I suggest you contact your local CIL (Center for Independent Living) and your county assistance office. A caseworker or social worker at either of these places can inform you of all the services available to you and help you start recieving them.

I hope everything works out for you. Please post again and keep me updated.
