Hi
I also had perthes as a child. I have gone on to have two pregnancies that went to term - no miscarriages, no premature births or stillborns. I did have some bleeding at around 14 weeks with both and had to take it easy throughout.
My son was born by emergency C-section 15 days overdue - he got stuck in the birth canal and so they had to rescue him. He was and still is, extremely broad across the shoulders, so chances are I would have had problems with him, perthes hip or not!
My daughter was a natural birth and she was 10 days overdue!
Son is now 13 years old and daughter is 11 years old.
My daughter has perthes and I have had some in depth discussions about her chances of carrying a pregnancy, giving birth naturally etc too, with her specialist. She has had bi-lateral pelvic osteotomies and an external fixator for perthes - his response is that if she needs a C-section, she would have needed it anyway without perthes. Perthes does not affect a woman's fertility and ability to fall pregnant, although the stress of wondering how you would cope, could be a factor there. She also, will more than likely need partial bed rest throughout a pregnancy, but thats only a possiblity.
If you are interested in information about perthes go to www.perthesnz.bravehost.com and share your story on the message board there. I'm still working on the teen and adult sections of it, but the glossary and other information are pretty comprehensive.

I have a 13 year old son that was diagnosed with this disease. He was a very active kid and is on the small thin side. We first thought it was a sports injury. He was playing tackle football and was tackled to the ground and three guys piled on top of him causing immediate pain and a limp.We thought it was just a pull or something and let it go. Well all through baseball season he was not himself, he lost his quickness and speed. After seeing three doctors and seven months he was diagnosed with this Disease. We had a specialist at the Schnieder children Hospital examine him. He has a minor limp and the xrays show partial damage to the bone ball. The doctor told us we had to wait for four months to get an idea of what phase this thing is in.-- posted by anthony320

I hope things are going well with your son's treatment since you posted. My name's Josh and I'm a 19 year old sophomore in college. When I was 6 I was diagnoised with Perthes disease and went through three years of physical therapy, leg casts and braces, and lots of docotr's visits. Thankfully, at age 9 I was able to walk and have full activity with no restrictions. Today there are no signs that I ever had Perthes disease. It is a long process and I know circumstances are different with your son being older, but hang in there - your doctor is right, it takes time. If you would like my email for contact, reply back and I will post it. Will be keeping your family in my prayers.

I am a 54 year old woman who had perthes as a seven year old child. I too have been having a great deal of pain over the last couple of years. My pain is also all the way down my leg. I have been seeing an orthpedic doctor and they are recommending that I may be a candidate for the Birmingham Hip Resurfacing procedure. I just had the bone scan done and I am currently awaiting my appointment for the results. I wish your father well and my best advice is that if his doctor says nothing is wrong...find another doctor or at best an orthpedic doctor. There is a website for the Birmingham Hip Procedure...it's very good and perhaps it will be helpful. Best Wishes
