In response to perthes at age5, now I'm 26 posted by velvet_tears:
Hi
I also had perthes as a child. I have gone on to have two pregnancies that went to term - no miscarriages, no premature births or stillborns. I did have some bleeding at around 14 weeks with both and had to take it easy throughout.
My son was born by emergency C-section 15 days overdue - he got stuck in the birth canal and so they had to rescue him. He was and still is, extremely broad across the shoulders, so chances are I would have had problems with him, perthes hip or not!
My daughter was a natural birth and she was 10 days overdue!
Son is now 13 years old and daughter is 11 years old.
My daughter has perthes and I have had some in depth discussions about her chances of carrying a pregnancy, giving birth naturally etc too, with her specialist. She has had bi-lateral pelvic osteotomies and an external fixator for perthes - his response is that if she needs a C-section, she would have needed it anyway without perthes. Perthes does not affect a woman's fertility and ability to fall pregnant, although the stress of wondering how you would cope, could be a factor there. She also, will more than likely need partial bed rest throughout a pregnancy, but thats only a possiblity.
If you are interested in information about perthes go to www.perthesnz.bravehost.com and share your story on the message board there. I'm still working on the teen and adult sections of it, but the glossary and other information are pretty comprehensive.
